an average of は、「平均〜の」「平均して〜の」という意味で、数値を伴って人や物の平均的な数を示す表現です。
たとえば、We receive an average of 20 inquiries a day. は「当社には1日平均20件の問い合わせがあります」という意味になります。
ところが、英語には on average や the average of もあります。日本語にするとどれも「平均」が入りやすいため、語順に迷う人も多いでしょう。この記事では、3つの形の違い、自然な例文、動詞の単数・複数まで整理します。

基本形は次のとおりです。
an average of ＋ 数値 ＋ 名詞
＝「平均で数値の名詞」「平均数値の名詞」
- an average of 10 customers：平均10人の顧客
- an average of five hours：平均5時間
- an average of three meetings a week：週平均3回の会議
Our café serves an average of 80 customers a day.

なぜan average ofという形になる？
average はここでは「平均（値・数）」という名詞です。an average が「一つの平均値」、of 20 inquiries のようなof以下が、その平均の中身を示します。
ただし実際の文では、an average of 20 inquiries 全体で「平均20件の問い合わせ」という数量表現のように働きます。
We get an average of 20 inquiries each day.
私たちは毎日平均20件の問い合わせを受けます。
数値の後ろには、通常は数えられる複数名詞を置きます。1以外なら customers、emails、hours のように複数形にしましょう。
an average of・on average・the average ofの違い
an average of：数値と名詞をまとめて示す
an average of ＋ 数値 ＋ 名詞 は、平均的な数や量を具体的に示します。
We have an average of six online meetings a week.
私たちは週平均6回のオンライン会議があります。
on average：「平均して」と文を修飾する
on average は副詞的な表現で、「平均して」「平均すると」という意味です。文頭、文末、主語の後ろなどに置けます。
On average, I sleep seven hours a night.
平均すると、私は一晩に7時間眠ります。
Visitors stay for three nights on average.
旅行者は平均3泊します。
Our customers spend, on average, 5,000 yen per visit.
お客様は1回来店するごとに平均5,000円使います。
in average や by average とは通常言いません。「平均して」は on average と覚えましょう。
the average of：「〜の平均値」そのもの
the average of A and B は「AとBの平均値」、the average of these numbers は「これらの数字の平均値」です。特定のデータから求めた平均を指すため、冠詞は通常 the になります。
The average of 60 and 80 is 70.
60と80の平均は70です。
The average of the three scores was higher than I expected.
3つの得点の平均は、私が予想していたより高かったです。
動詞は単数形？複数形？
an average of ＋ 複数名詞 が主語になると、動詞の形で迷いやすくなります。自然な英語では、何を一つのまとまりとして見ているかで決まります。
人や物の複数性を意識するなら複数動詞
複数の人や物が実際に行動する場合は、複数動詞がよく使われます。
An average of 25 students attend each workshop.
各ワークショップには平均25人の生徒が参加します。
An average of 100 packages are delivered here every day.
ここには毎日平均100個の荷物が配達されます。
一つの量・時間として扱うなら単数動詞
時間・金額・距離などを一つの量として捉える場合は、単数動詞も自然です。
An average of three hours is needed to complete the task.
その作業を終えるには平均3時間が必要です。
一方、the average 自体が主語なら、平均値は一つなので基本的に単数です。
The average is 20.

a day・per day・each dayの使い分け
平均を表す文では、期間を示す表現もよく続きます。
- a day / a week / a month：1日につき／週に／月に（会話で自然）
- per day / per week / per month：1日あたり／週あたり／月あたり（数字・報告で明確）
- each day / each week：毎日／毎週（個々の日・週を意識）
We sell an average of 30 sandwiches a day.
私たちは1日平均30個のサンドイッチを売ります。
The app receives an average of 500 downloads per day.
そのアプリは1日あたり平均500回ダウンロードされます。
An average of 12 people join the tour each week.
毎週平均12人がツアーに参加します。

average は形容詞として名詞の直前にも置けます。

above average は「平均以上」、below average は「平均以下」です。

an average ofとthe average ofを混同する
an average of 10 calls は「平均10件の電話」、the average of the results は「その結果の平均値」です。数値つきの数量を示すのか、計算した平均値そのものを指すのかで分けます。
すぐに言えないときの簡単な言い換え
an average of がすぐ出てこなければ、usually about や about … each day でも十分伝わります。
We usually get about 20 emails a day.
私たちは普段、1日に約20通のメールを受け取ります。
About 15 people come each week.
毎週約15人が来ます。
厳密な「平均値」ではなく概数になりますが、日常会話では扱いやすい言い換えです。
