なぜmercyが「なすがまま」になる？
mercy は「慈悲・情け・容赦」です。慈悲を示すかどうかを決められるのは、力を持つ側です。
たとえば敵に捕らえられた人は、自分で運命を決められません。相手が助けるか、罰するかを決めます。つまり、相手のmercyに自分の状況を委ねているわけです。
