What type of dogs do you think of when you think of a country?
Recently, I had this conversation with a friend and realised the UK has the most amount of dogs breeds in the world! So I thought I would talk about a few special ones here. It is definitely not just an excuse for me to look at dog pictures!
みなさんは、どこかの国を思い浮かべたとき、どんな犬が思い浮かびますか？
最近、友だちとそんな話をしていて、イギリスは世界で最も多くの犬種が生まれた国だということに気づいたの！
そこで今回は、その中から特に有名な犬たちをご紹介しますね。
まあ、ワンコの写真をたくさん眺めたいだけかもしれませんけど！
English Bullterrier：イングリッシュ・ブルテリア
This time last year, my brother adopted his English Bullterrier. This is her, looking gorgeous!
Have you ever seen this type of dog before?
Her name is Rivvy, and she is super rambunctious and has a massive attitude!
I used to chase her around the living room for hours but if you try to take her for a walk she pretends she is asleep!
ちょうど昨年の今ごろ、弟がイングリッシュ・ブルテリアを飼い始めたの。これがその子。すごく可愛いでしょ！
この犬種、見たことある？
名前は Rivvy（リヴィ）っていうんだけど、もうとにかくやんちゃで、自己主張がすごいの！
リビングでは、何時間も追いかけっこするくらい元気いっぱいなのに、いざお散歩に連れて行こうとするとなぜか「寝たフリ」するのよ！
Golden Retriever：ゴールデン・レトリバー
Japan’s most famous dog breeds are the Akita and the Shiba Inu, but can you think of the UK’s most popular breed of dog?
It is the Golden Retriever! Originally from Scotland. I never thought about where the Golden Retriever originated, so this was a shock to me!
日本で有名な犬種といえば、秋田犬や柴犬ですよね。
では、イギリスでいちばん人気の犬種って、何だと思いますか？
正解は…ゴールデン・レトリバー！
しかも、発祥はスコットランドなんですって！
私、ゴールデン・レトリバーの原産地がどこなのか、今まで考えたこともなくて…この事実を知ったときは、ちょっとした衝撃でした！
English bulldog：イングリッシュ・ブルドッグ
However, I think the most iconic dog breed from Britain is the English bulldog.
We often associate this dog with Winston Churchill (World War Two Prime Minister) due to both having unique jowls.
でも私の中で、イギリスを代表する犬種といえば、やっぱりイングリッシュ・ブルドッグかな、と思っています。
イングリッシュ・ブルドッグといえば、よく第二次世界大戦時の首相・ウィンストン・チャーチルを連想されるんだけど、それはふたりのあの特徴的なたるんとした頬がそっくりだからなのよ。
spaniel breeds：スパニエル系の犬たち
My personal favourite though are the spaniel breeds; with their long fluffy ears and wonderful temperament, I think they are so pretty! Though they love mud…
でも、私のいちばんのお気に入りはスパニエル系の犬たちなんです。
あの長くてふわふわの耳に、やさしくて素敵な性格……もう、たまらなく可愛いわ！
ただし、泥遊びが大好きなのはちょっと困りものだけどね。
Corgi：コーギー
And lastly, on our list of British dogs is our late Queen Elizabeth 2nds` beloved Corgis. She had over 30 of them at one point. I wish I had that kind of space!
The corgi originated in Wales and is much beloved for their short, stumpy little legs and sassy personality.
そして最後にご紹介するのは、故エリザベス2世女王がこよなく愛したコーギーたちです。
なんと、多いときには30匹以上も飼われていたそうなんですよ！
そんなにたくさんのコーギーと暮らせるなんて……私にもそれくらいの広さがあったらいいのに！って思っちゃいますよね。
コーギーはウェールズ原産の犬で、ちょこんと短い足と、ちょっぴり生意気な性格が愛されポイントです。
