In Japan, sweet potatoes are very popular. You can buy them from local shops, food stalls, and make them at home. In Japan, sweet potatoes are gold inside and purple outside.
日本では、さつまいもがとても人気ですよね。
お店や屋台で買ったり、おうちで料理して楽しむ人も多いと思います。
日本のさつまいもは、中身は黄金色で、皮は紫色なのも特徴的ですよね。
However, in the US? They’re brown on the outside and orange on the inside!
でも、アメリカのさつまいもはというと…？
中実はオレンジ色で皮は茶色なんです！
They are often used for savory dishes, like steak and potatoes or french fries, but they are also used for sweets and desserts. The best way to eat an American sweet potato is mashed with cinnamon and butter. Some families add marshmallows on top!
アメリカでは、さつまいもはステーキの付け合わせやフライドポテトなど、お惣菜によく使われます。
でも実は、スイーツやデザートにも使われるんですよ。
アメリカ流のいちばんおいしい食べ方は、マッシュしたさつまいもに、シナモンとバターを加えるスタイル。

Another food that is similar is the pumpkin.In Japan, pumpkins are green on the outside.
もうひとつ、似たような食べものにかぼちゃがあります。
日本のかぼちゃの皮は緑色ですよね。
American pumpkins are orange. They also taste different, and are more popular for soups and pies because they are lighter.
アメリカのはオレンジ色なんです。アメリカのかぼちゃは、味わいも日本のものとは少し違って、日本のかぼちゃよりもあっさり軽めの味なので、スープやパイに使われることが多いんですよ。
It’s so fun to see how even the same foods, like sweet potatoes and pumpkins, can be so different in Japan and the U.S., right?
