whether or notの意味と使い方｜語順・例文・ifとの違い

whether or not は、「～かどうか」と「～であろうとなかろうと」の二つの意味で使われます。

I’m not sure whether or not she’s coming. なら「彼女が来るかどうか分からない」。一方、Whether or not she comes, we’ll start at seven. なら「彼女が来ても来なくても、7時に始める」です。

1．「～かどうか」

答えが「はい」か「いいえ」か分からないことを、文の一部として示す使い方です。

その条件が成立してもしなくても、主文の結果や意思が変わらないことを表します。

「～するかどうか」と行動を迷うときは、whether or not to＋動詞 または whether to＋動詞＋or not を使えます。

whether or notとifの違い

日常的な「～かどうか」では、whetherの代わりにifを使える場合があります。

どちらも「彼女が空いているかどうか分かりません」です。ただし、語順には注意が必要です。

• 正：I don’t know whether or not she’s free.
• 誤：I don’t know if or not she’s free.

I don’t know whether or not he’s coming. は「彼が来るかどうか分からない」であり、「彼が来るかどうかにかかわらず分からない」ではありません。主文が知識・確認・判断を表すなら、まず「～かどうか」と考えます。

間接疑問では普通の語順にする

• 正：Do you know whether or not she is ready?
• 誤：Do you know whether or not is she ready?
