英語で「1番目・2番目・3番目」のような順番を表す数字を序数（ordinal numbers）といいます。1はoneではなくfirst（1st）、2はsecond（2nd）、3はthird（3rd）。日付・順位・階数・記念日など、日常のさまざまな場面で使います。

序数の末尾｜st・nd・rd・thの付け方

原則は最後の一桁で判断します。ただし11th・12th・13thは例外です。末尾だけを見ると1・2・3ですが、st・nd・rdではなくthを付けます。111th・112th・113thも同じです。

21stはtwenty-firstのように、複合した数字では最後の部分だけを序数にします。22ndはtwenty-second、43rdはforty-thirdです。
序数の前にtheを付ける理由
序数は「その順番にある特定の一つ」を指すため、通常はtheと一緒に使います。
She was the first person to arrive.
彼女が最初に到着した人でした。
This is my second cup of coffee.
これは今日2杯目のコーヒーです。
my・your・herなどの所有格がある場合は、theを重ねません。my second cupであり、the my second cupとはしません。
日付で序数を使う
日付は、書くときにAugust 5またはAugust 5thと表せますが、読むときはAugust fifthと序数で読みます。

順位・競技で序数を使う
She finished first in the race.

Our team came in third.
私たちのチームは3位でした。
finish firstやcome in thirdのように、順位を述べるときはtheを付けずに使うことがあります。
階数で序数を使う
The meeting room is on the fifth floor.
会議室は5階にあります。
アメリカ英語では地上階をfirst floorと数えます。イギリス英語では地上階をground floor、その上をfirst floorと呼ぶため、建物では一階分ずれることがあります。

firstとfirstlyはどう違う？
順番を表す数字としてはfirstを使います。話や文章の項目を並べる際はfirst、firstlyの両方が使われますが、first, second, finallyのようにそろえると自然で簡潔です。
