天気予報は英語で？weather forecastの意味と「予報によると・当たる・外れる」の表現

「天気予報」は英語で weather forecast です。会話では文脈から天気の話だと分かるため、単に the forecast と言うこともよくあります。

たとえば「天気予報では明日は雨です」は、The weather forecast says it’ll rain tomorrow. または According to the forecast, it’ll rain tomorrow. と表せます。

weather は「天気」、forecast は「予報・予測」です。組み合わせた weather forecast で「天気予報」になります。

forecast の発音は、名詞でも動詞でもおおよそ「フォーキャスト」に近い音です。複数形・過去形・過去分詞はいずれも forecast が一般的です。

forecastは名詞と動詞の両方で使える

名詞：「予報・予測」

名詞では、the forecast だけでも「予報」という意味になります。

• The forecast says it’ll be sunny.
  予報では晴れるそうです。
• Rain is in the forecast.
  雨の予報です。
• Snow is not in the forecast.
  雪の予報は出ていません。

動詞：「予報する・予測する」

forecast は動詞としても使えます。天気予報の文では受け身の be forecast や、forecasters forecast… の形がよく見られます。

• Heavy rain is forecast for tonight.
  今夜は大雨が予想されています。
• Temperatures are forecast to rise tomorrow.
  明日は気温が上がると予想されています。
• Forecasters are predicting strong winds.
  予報官は強風を予想しています。

「天気予報によると」は英語で？

「天気予報によると」は、According to the weather forecast, … または短く According to the forecast, … と言えます。

• According to the forecast, it’ll rain this afternoon.
  天気予報によると、今日の午後は雨が降るそうです。
• According to the weather forecast, it’ll be hot tomorrow.
  天気予報によると、明日は暑くなるそうです。
• According to the forecast, the storm will pass by morning.
  予報によると、嵐は朝までに通り過ぎるそうです。

より会話的には、The forecast says… も便利です。

• The forecast says it’ll be cloudy all day.
  予報では一日中曇りだそうです。
• The forecast says there’s a 70% chance of rain.
  予報では降水確率70％です。

「予報が当たる・外れる」は英語で？

  予報は当たりました。
• The forecast was accurate.
  予報は正確でした。
• They got the forecast right.
  予報を正しく当てました。

予報が外れた

• The forecast was wrong.
  予報は外れました。
• The forecast was inaccurate.
  予報は正確ではありませんでした。

The forecast missed. と日本語の「外れる」を直訳するより、was wrong や was inaccurate を使うほうが自然です。

weather reportとの違い

weather forecast は、これからの天気に関する「予報」です。一方、weather report は現在の状況を含む「気象情報・天気の報告」を指し、テレビやラジオの天気コーナーを表すこともあります。

• I watched the weather report on TV.
  テレビで天気予報のコーナーを見ました。
• The forecast says it’ll snow tonight.
  予報では今夜雪になるそうです。

「今後どうなるか」という検索意図では、まず weather forecast を覚えておけば大丈夫です。

大雨・洪水・津波などの警報や注意報を英語で確認するときは、warning・alert・advisoryの違いも覚えておくと安心です。
