足し算・引き算・掛け算・割り算を英語で｜計算記号と式の読み方

2＋3＝5は英語でTwo plus three equals five.です。足し算・引き算・掛け算・割り算は、記号ごとの基本語を覚えればすぐ読めます。

四則演算の英語早見表

足し算はplus・add

• 2 + 3 = 5：Two plus three equals five.
• 10 + 8 = 18：Ten plus eight is eighteen.
• Add three and five.（3と5を足してください）
• Add three to five.（5に3を足してください）

「足し算」はaddition、「足す」はaddです。式を読むときはplus、計算の指示にはaddをよく使います。足し算の答え「和」はsumです。

引き算はminus・subtract

• 8 − 5 = 3：Eight minus five equals three.
• 3 − 8 = −5：Three minus eight equals minus five.
• Subtract five from eight.（8から5を引いてください）
• Take five away from eight.（8から5を引いてください）

「引き算」はsubtraction、「引く」はsubtractです。subtract A from Bは「BからAを引く」なので語順に注意しましょう。答え「差」はdifferenceです。

掛け算はtimes・multiplied by

• 2 × 3 = 6：Two times three equals six.
• 4 × 5 = 20：Four multiplied by five is twenty.
• Multiply four by five.（4に5を掛けてください）
• Three times as much（3倍の量）

会話で式を読むならtimesが簡単です。数学的・説明的にはmultiplied byも使います。「掛け算」はmultiplication、「掛ける」はmultiply、答え「積」はproductです。

割り算はdivided by

• 8 ÷ 2 = 4：Eight divided by two equals four.
• 10 ÷ 5 = 2：Ten divided by five is two.
• Divide ten by five.（10を5で割ってください）
• Split it into four equal parts.（4等分してください）

「割り算」はdivision、「割る」はdivideです。divide A by Bで「AをBで割る」。答え「商」はquotientです。分数の斜線もoverやdivided byと考えられます。詳しくは分数を英語でへ。

＝はequals・is

イコール記号「＝」はequalsと読みます。口頭ではisやmakesも使えます。

• Two plus two equals four.
• Two plus two is four.
• Two and two makes four.

equalsの主語は式全体なので、通常は三人称単数形のequalsにします。

余りのある割り算

10 ÷ 3 = 3 余り1
Ten divided by three is three with a remainder of one.

• 1.5 + 2.3 = 3.8：One point five plus two point three equals three point eight.
• 1/2 + 1/4 = 3/4：One half plus one quarter equals three quarters.

• ×をcrossと読まず、式ではtimesまたはmultiplied by
• ÷をdivisionと読まず、式ではdivided by
• subtract five from eightは8から5を引く
• 2 + 3 = 5ではequalではなくequalsが基本

掛けるはtimesとmultiplyのどちら？

式を読むならtimes、動詞として「掛ける」ならmultiplyを使います。2×3はtwo times three、指示ならmultiply two by threeです。

割り勘はdivideを使う？

計算としてdivide the bill by fourとも言えますが、会話ではsplit the billやsplit it four waysが自然です。
