How to Use “find out / realise / notice”

Today I’d like to explain three common words in English that are similar to each other but have slightly different meaning.
今日は、英語でよく使う三つの単語について説明したいと思います。これらの言葉は非常に似ていますが、持つ意味が少々異なるので注意しましょう。

「find out / realise / notice」
It is probably best to understand them in sentences, so here are a few examples:

文章を読んで理解するのが一番わかりやすいので、例文を見てみましょう：

1) find out – 調べる

I found out what time the store closes.
「お店が何時に閉まるかを調べた」

2) realise – 気づく

I realised the importance of English at the meeting.
「会議で、英語の重要性に気づいた」

3) notice – 気づく

I noticed she got a hair cut.
「彼女が髪を切った事に気づいた」

All three means that you ‘gain some kind of information,’ but the meaning slightly differs. ‘Find out’ usually means that you need a specific piece of information and you make the effort to gain that information. ‘Realize’ and ‘notice’ usually means that you did not make an effort, but ‘realise’ does not rely on visual elements while ‘notice’ does.

どれも「なにかを知る」という意味にはなりますが、少し意味が異なります。‘Find out’ はなにか情報が必要で、それを調べるという意味が近いです。‘Realise’ と ‘notice’ はなにかに気づくという意味で、調べることはありません。しかし、’notice’ は目で見て知るに対し ‘realize’ は情報のおかげで知る時に使います。
