Groundhog Day: 北アメリカ流・春の迎え方

Every country has their own unique holidays and traditions. As a foreigner living in Japan, I am always excited to not only learn about Japan’s abundance of customs and traditions, but also to share some of my own country’s culture as well.
どの国にも、その国ならではの祝日や伝統があるものよね。
日本に住む外国人として暮らしている私にとって、日本の本当にたくさんの伝統文化を学べることをいつも楽しんでいるわ。
同時に、自分の国の文化についても、皆さんに少しずつ紹介できたら嬉しいなと思っているのよ。

Now that winter is coming to a close, one such interesting holiday that recently occurred, was Groundhog Day.
冬も終わりに近づくこの季節に行われる、ちょっと面白い祝日に「Groundhog Day（グラウンドホッグ・デー）」があるのよ。

Groundhog Day is celebrated every year on February 2nd, in both the United States and Canada. It’s a minor holiday with no innately religious ties, and most people from other countries have probably never heard of this day.
グラウンドホッグ・デーは、アメリカとカナダで毎年2月2日にお祝いされる行事なの。
宗教的な意味合いはなく、あまり知名度が高い祝日ではないので、他の国の人にはあまり知られていないかもしれないわね。

The central premise of this holiday lies with the groundhog, also known as a woodchuck. Groundhogs are a large animal from the rodent family, native specifically to North America. They look a bit like very large, very fat squirrels, and spend most of their time burrowing under the ground.
この祝日の主役は、グラウンドホッグ（別名ウッドチャック）という動物なの。
グラウンドホッグはネズミやリスの仲間で、北アメリカに生息している動物よ。
見た目は、どてっと太ったリスのような姿をしていて、普段は地面に穴を掘って、その中で過ごすことが多いの。

Now groundhogs hibernate during the winter, which means that they sleep through the coldest months of the year and wake up in early spring. So every year on February 2nd, people gather from all over to come and watch with bated breath, as the specially appointed groundhog emerges from his den.
グラウンドホッグは冬の間は冬眠する動物なの。
つまり、一年で一番寒い時期は眠って過ごして、春のはじめ頃に目を覚ますのよ。
そこで毎年 2月2日になると、人々が各地から集まってきて、特別に選ばれたグラウンドホッグが巣穴から出てくる瞬間を、固唾をのんで見守るの。

The most famous groundhog is named Punxsutawney Phil, and he lives in Pennsylvania, U.S. (Although there are also a few other groundhogs who participate in this event, across the U.S and Canada.)
いちばん有名なグラウンドホッグは、「パンクサトーニー・フィル（Punxsutawney Phil）」という名前なの。
フィルはアメリカのペンシルベニア州に住んでいるのよ。
ただし、このイベントはアメリカやカナダの各地で行われているので、フィル以外のグラウンドホッグも登場するわ。

When Phil emerges from his den, if he sees his shadow and returns back into his den, the belief is that there will be 6 more weeks of winter. On the other hand, if he comes out and doesn’t see his shadow, that means that spring is just around the corner.
フィルが巣穴から出てきたとき、もし自分の影を見て巣穴に戻ってしまうと、冬はあと6週間続くと言われているの。
でも、影が見えなければ、春はもうすぐそこまで来ているというサインなのよ。

This is a fun tradition that we use to predict the beginning of spring and the end of winter. It’s a tradition that stems from the old belief that groundhogs are able to somehow predict the weather, and have a natural sense for the changing of the seasons.
これは、春の訪れと冬の終わりを占う楽しい伝統行事なの。
グラウンドホッグには天気を予測する力や、季節の変わり目を感じ取る感覚があるのではないか、という昔からの言い伝えが、この伝統の始まりなのよ。

Now, do people in North America actually believe that groundhogs have the ability to predict the future? No, not really. Even so, we find joy in upholding the tradition anyways, and watching Phil emerge from his den every year either in person or on TV.
では、北アメリカの人たちは本当に、グラウンドホッグが未来を予測できると信じているのかしら？
実は、そこまで本気で信じているわけではないの。
それでも、この伝統を大切に守りながら、毎年フィルが巣穴から出てくる瞬間を、実際にその場で見たり、テレビで見守ったりして楽しんでいるのよ。

Sometimes we have traditions and customs that may seem silly, and whose origins and reasoning we may not even really know. Even so, we like to keep them alive anyway.
時には、少しばかばかしく思えるような伝統や習慣もあるものよね。
どうして始まったのか、その理由がはっきり分からないものもある。
それでも、人々はそうした伝統を大切に守りながら受け継いでいくのよ。

Groundhog Day is admittedly quite ridiculous, but after a long and cold winter it gives people hope for warmer days to come. And although Phil may have predicted 6 more weeks of winter this year, we will still be looking forward to seeing what Phil does next February, and every winter to come.
グラウンドホッグ・デーは、確かに少しばかばかしく思える行事かもしれないわね。
それでも、長くて寒い冬のあとには、これから暖かい日がやってくるという希望を人々に与えてくれるの。

今年はフィルが「冬はあと6週間続く」と残念な予想したけれど、それでも私たちは、来年の2月にまたフィルがどうするのかを楽しみにしているのよ。
そしてこれから先の冬も、毎年ね。
