In the United States, Christmas is a very big holiday
– just like New Years to Japan.
アメリカでは、クリスマスは日本の新年と同様にとても大切な祝日です。
Usually people will start to get in the spirit after our Thanksgiving.
People will put up trees, decorations and lights, many businesses
start to decorate, and Christmas music can be heard almost everywhere.
人々は感謝祭の後からワクワクし始めて、
ツリーを用意したり、飾りつけをしたり、沢山の企業も飾りつけを始め、
クリスマスミュージックはどんな場所でも聴くことができるのよ。
My family would always string up some popcorn to use as garland for the tree.
私の家族はポップコーンを花輪のようにツリーに飾ったものだったわ！
In many department stores, Santa will make a guest appearance for
children to come visit and tell him what they want for Christmas
and get their picture taken with him.
He will always ask them if they have been “naughty” or “nice”.
沢山のデパートでは、サンタに欲しいものを伝えるためと
一緒に写真を撮りにに来た子供たちの為に
サンタクロースがゲスト出演をするの。
サンタはいつも子供達に一年を通して“いい子”だったかどうかを尋ねます。
Children will leave a plate of cookies and a glass of milkbefore going to bed.
They hope that they have been good enough all year long
in the hopes of waking up and finding presents under the tree on Christmas morning.
子供達はベッドに入る前にお皿一杯のクッキーとミルクを置いて行くわ。
彼らは自分たちが一年を通して十分に良い子だったことを願って
クリスマスの朝、ツリーの下にプレゼントを見けられることを楽しみにします。

In my family it was always special day to make a bunch of
cookies to decorate to leave for Santa.
私の家族は、出発するサンタに沢山のクッキーを作るため、
その日はとっても特別な日でした！
Stockings with their names on them are hung (usually on a fireplace
mantle, or staircase)
for small gifts – or if you`ve been bad, Santa will leave a lump of coal
in your stocking.
プレゼントを入れるために子供たちの名前をつけた靴下は
（大抵は暖炉のマントルや階段に）つるされます。
でも、悪い子にしていたらサンタは靴下の中に一塊の石炭を置いていってしまうわ！
Some television networks even have “Santa Radar” to track and
will televise where Santa is at in the world.
あるTVネットワークでは、サンタ追跡の為の「サンタ・レーダー」まで持っていて、
サンタが世界中のどこいるかテレビで放送することもあるわ。

There are many different Christmas traditions that people have.
人々は沢山の異なったクリスマスの伝統を持っています。

Some families will read “Twas the Night　Before Christmas” on Christmas Eve,
some will drive all around town to look at all of the lights and decorations,
some will put out a nativity set – the　scene of baby Jesus in the manger with
Mary, Joseph, and the Three Wise Men.
ある家族は「クリスマス前夜」をクリスマス・イヴに読み、
あるところでは全てのイルミネーションや飾りつけを見るために街中をドライブ
するし、キリスト誕生劇のセット（飼い葉おけの中の赤ん坊のキリストと一緒の
マリア、ヨセフと3人の賢者のシーン)を作る人たちもいるの！
Many people dream of a white　Christmas – a day with snow;
just as the song goes “I`m dreaming of a White　Christmas….”
沢山の人たちはホワイトクリスマス‥クリスマスに雪が降るのと同時に
“I’m dreaming of a white Christmas♪”が流れるのを夢見ているわ。
（※I’m dreaming of a white Christmasはビング・クロスビーの名曲、
「ホワイト・クリスマス」の歌詞の一部です。）
People will send and receive many, many Christmas cards.
Some families will usually write　a letter to mail with the cards
to let others know what has been going on throughout the year.
We sent out about 60 cards this year.
人々はとても沢山のクリスマスカードを送りあいます。
ある家族は手紙を書いてカードと一緒に送り、
他の人たちに一年を通して何が起こったかを知らせるの。
今年、私たちは約60枚のカードを送りました！
Always on Christmas Day we have a big meal just as we do for Thanksgiving;
instead of　turkey we will eat ham with similar side dishes such as
sweet potatoes,
vegetables, and many desserts.
My mom is the best cook in the world and I will miss her cooking this
year　very much!
いつもクリスマスの日に私たちは感謝際と同じような豪華な食事を頂きます。
七面鳥の代わりにハムと、サイドメニューとしてサツマイモや
野菜、沢山のデザートを食べます。
私の母の料理は世界で一番！今年は彼女の料理がとっても恋しいわ！
Usually all offices are closed and people will generally have 5-10 days
off during the holidays.
Retail stores are open, and it is a tradition for most to go shopping
the day after Christmas in the hopes of finding really good sales.
It can get kind of crazy -some will even camp out the night before in hopes of getting
all of the good deals before they run out.
殆ど全てのお店は閉店して、人々はクリスマス休暇の間に通常５～１０日の休日
があります。
小売店は開店され、沢山の人たちがクリスマスの翌日、
良いセール品を求めて買い物にでかけます。
本当に安く手に入れることができるの！
良い商品を売り切れる前に手に入れるために
セールの前夜に野宿をする人たちまでいるんです！

Christmas is a holiday that is shared and celebrated by many religions.
クリスマスは全ての宗教によって共有され、祝われる日だと思います。
Christmas has various forms or where and how it came about.
December 25th is the date that may have been chosen to correspond with
either a Roman festival, or with the winter solstice.
Christians celebrate this day as Jesus` birthday –
but December 25th is not the actual date of his birth.
クリスマスには沢山の形と場所があり、それはどう生じたのかしら？
12月25日は古代ローマ人の祝祭あるいは冬至と結びつけて
選ばれたのかもしれません。
クリスマスはイエスの誕生日として祝われているけど
12月25日は彼の生まれた実際の日付ではありません。
Throughout history there have been many forms of Santa Claus.
Today`s version (the red　suit, black boots, etc.) is thought to have been established
in 1885 by Christmas card illustrations.
Some believe that Santa Claus wasborn in US in the 1860’s;
he was named this as he　had a white beard and a belly and
that he did not become an important person at Christmas until
the　Novelist Washington Irving put him in a novel that he wrote in 1809.
歴史を通して、サンタクロースには沢山の形があるわ。
今日の形（赤いスーツに黒いブーツ等‥）はクリスマスカードのイラストによって
1885年に確立されたと考えられているそうです。
ある人々はサンタクロースは1860年代のアメリカで生まれたと信じています。
彼は白ひげと大きなお腹の人だと言い伝えられてきたの。
小説家のワシントン・アーヴィンが1809年に書いた小説に
彼をについて言及するまでその人は重要な人物ではなかったそうです。
Today`s Santa lives on the North Pole with Mrs. Claus,
all of his little elf helpers and reindeer.
There　have been many movies and books about him.
今日のサンタはクローズ夫人、彼の小さな妖精とトナカイと
一緒に北極で暮らしていて、
そこには彼についての沢山の映画と本があるみたい！

This is the first year that I will not be home for the holidays.
Even though I will miss my family very much, we are lucky to have many
friends here to celebrate Christmas with.　
今回は私にとってはじめての実家にいない休暇になります。
とても家族が恋しいけれど、私たちは沢山の友達と一緒に
クリスマスを祝うことができてとっても幸せよ！
