I recently came across a project by photographer James Mollison titled ‘Where Children Sleep’.

私は最近、写真家ジェームズ・モリソンの‘Where Children Sleep’という
プロジェクトを偶然見つけました。

Mollison travelled around the world to photograph the different places where children sleep.
Some of the countries he visited included the US, Japan, China, Cambodia, Nepal and Italy.
モリソンは子供たちの様々な寝る場所を写真に収めるため、世界中を旅しました。
彼が旅した国々の中にはアメリカ、日本、中国、コロンビア、ネパールをして
イタリアもあります。

The photographs differ greatly and show the vast inequality that exists in the world. Some children slept in big bedrooms filled with lots of toys, while others slept in small, sparse rooms which they shared with multiple family members.
写真は環境によって大きく異なり、世界に存在する大きな不平等を表しています。子供たちの中には、たくさんのおもちゃでいっぱいの大きなベッドルームで寝る子もいれば、その一方で、質素で小さな部屋に家族皆と寝る子供たちもいました。

The project was created to highlight children’s rights by contrasting the different living situations for young people across the globe.
このプロジェクトは、全世界の若者たちの為に、異なる生活環境を比較することで子供たちの権利にスポットライトをあてる目的でつくられました。

I found the images very confronting and I was saddened by many of the children’s
situations. I wondered how in this day and age, with the technological advancements
humanity has made, that millions of children have to live in such poverty.
私はこの写真を見て考えさせられ、子供たち置かれている現状に悲しい気持ちになりました。この現代に、人類が作りだした技術の進歩がある中で、どうしてこんなにも多くの子供たちが貧困の中生活しなければならないのかと疑問に思います。

This glimpse into the lives of other people from around the world got me thinking about the places I have lived. My Tokyo apartment is a lot smaller than the apartment I rented in Australia,　but for me this is all I need and I’m grateful for my tiny place.
世界の人々の生活を垣間見て、私はこれまで住んだ場所のことを考えてみました。
私の東京のアパートはオーストラリアで借りていたものに比べるととても小さいですが、私にとっては十分で、ありがたく感じています。

I have lived in Australia, London and Tokyo, and all of the places I have lived were very different in size and style.
私はオーストラリア、ロンドン、そして東京に住んだことがあり、大きさや様式がその土地土地によって大きく異なりました。
