Happy spring solstice, everyone!
春分おめでとう！

This Monday, the 20th of March will be our spring solstice here on Earth.
These Solstice or Equinox days have been carefully observed and celebrated by cultures all over the world for more than 11 thousand years.
3月20日は地球上で春分ですね。
夏至や春分の日は適切に観測されて11000年以上世界中でお祝いされています。

This is the day when our planet’s tilted equatorial plain passes through the center of the sun.
In other words, it is the time when both the northern and the southern hemispheres of our planet receive the same amount of sunlight in a day.
地球が赤道の方に傾いた時太陽の真ん中を通るのがその日（夏至や春分）です。
言い換えてみれば、地球の北半球と南半球の両方が一日に同じ量の太陽の光を受ける時ということです。

There is also an opposite position around the sun in the autumn.
These dates can change over long periods of time due to the the arcing of Earth’s axis of rotation or pole.
Our north and south poles slowly move around in a giant circle once every 25,600 years.
This is what gives us the 12 “houses” or zodiac star signs. Our north pole will point in the direction of one zodiac house for about 2,100 years.
また、春分があれば秋分もあります。
それらの日は地軸が傾くことにより長い時間をかけて変化します。
私達の北極と南極はゆっくり25,920年ごとに大きな円をかいて移動しています。
これは私たちに12の干支や星座を与えてくれます。星座は北極がどの星座を指しているのか2,100年間で決めます。

If we did not keep adjusting our 12 month calendar, then in about 13,300 years, July would be very cold in Japan and then New Years would be very hot in Japan.
もし私達が少しずつカレンダーを調整しなかったら、13,300年で日本の7月は寒くなり、そしてお正月はとても暖かくなります。

This is why the ancient people used much more complicated calendars based on 25,600 year cycles or 1 “Great Year”.
So, enjoy your solstice and have some spring beer.
これが大昔の人は私達が使っているカレンダーよりも“大年し”という25,600年サイクルのもっと複雑なカレンダーを使っていた理由です。
だから皆さん春分を楽しみながらビールを嗜みましょう。
