During my first visit in Japan, I was amazed at how everything looked so beautiful.
From food packaging to decorative objects, everything was so delicate.
But most of all, I was captivated by the patterns on tenuguis and furoshikis.
初めての日本の滞在中、色んなものがとっても美しくてびっくりしたわ。
食べ物のパッケージから装飾品まで、すべてが繊細だったの。
でも一番は魅了されたのは、手ぬぐいとふろしきの模様ね！

I couldn’t quite understand what was the purpose of tenugui but I bought some anyway because the prints were absolutely gorgeous.
Some of them had traditional patterns similar to Ukiyo-e and some of them had bold patterns and vivid colors.
I spent a lot of time going from shop to shop, looking at all these beautiful pieces of cloth.
てぬぐいをどういう目的で使うのか全く理解できなかったけど、柄がゴージャスだったから買ってみてたわ。
伝統的な浮世絵の柄に似ているものや、大胆な柄やヴィヴィッド色の物があるの。
私はこの美しい布地を見に店から店を回ったわ。

We don’t have such things in France. The closest things we have are tea towels.
But ours are usually very plain and quite boring. Often they have just one color or maybe a check-patterned.
Or a small embroidery on the corner. Nothing to be excited about, really.
フランスにはてぬぐいの様なものはないの。一番近いのはティータオル（イギリス発祥の大きめサイズのキッチンクロス）ね。
でもフランスのものはたいてい無地でつまらないわ。よくあるのは色がついていたり、チェック柄ね。
もしくは角に小さい刺繍がついていたり。
本当に何にもわくわくするものなんてないわ。

There is no way someone would ever hang their tea towel on the wall.
To us, tea towels are only useful objects so we don’t care so much about how they look like.
Nice tea towels with original patterns can be hard to find France, so why bother when a basic one will do the job as properly?
壁にティータオルをかける以外の使い方をする人はいないわね。
私たちにとってティータオルは単に役立つ物だから、どう見えるかなんて気にかけないの。
オリジナルの柄をもつ素敵なティータオルはフランスでは見つけるのが難しいの、だから普通のやつで十分よ。

Of course I think it is a mistake because it is so much more enjoyable to use beautiful things in our daily life.Here,
Tenugui are both useful and beautiful.
And on top of that, they are pretty cheap.
I really like using my Japanese tenugui everyday, and I have to refrain myself not to buy new ones all the time! What about you?
