Here is a short blog entry I wrote about a documentary I recently watched.
今回は短いブログ内容ですが、最近みたドキュメンタリーについて書いてみました。

Recently, I watched a documentary called American Tongues. This documentary explores the different regional accents across America and explains how they developed. It also talks about the prejudices Americans have towards other Americans with different accents. For example, some people believe that Americans from the South (i.e., Texas, Georgia) aren’t smart because of the way they speak. People from the North (i.e., New York) are considered to be more abrasive and pushy because of the way they sound.

最近、私は「American Tongues.」というドキュメンタリーをみました。
このドキュメンタリーはアメリカを縦断しながら、どうのように違う地域の訛りが形成されたのか冒険していきます。また、アメリカ人同士での異なったアクセントに対する偏見にても触れています。
たとえば、南側の出身者は話し方から賢くないと思われていたり、北側の出身者は話し方の音からも少し耳障りで裕福な人々だと思われています。

Even though this documentary was released in 1998, many of these negative perceptions still hold true. For example, I have a friend from Georgia who trained herself to speak with a standard American accent because people at her job didn’t take her seriously when she spoke with a Georgian accent. Of course, when you give her a beer or two the accent comes right back out. But at work she sounds like a completely different person.

ドキュメンタリーは1998年に公開されたものですが、こうした多くの認識は今でも続いています。例えば、私には、彼女自身標準的なアメリカのアクセントに訓練されたジョージア州出身の友達がいます。彼女が会社でジョージア州訛りで話すと、あまり真剣に聞いてもらえないのです。もちろんビールを飲んで酔っ払うとすぐにジョージア州訛りになってしまいます。仕事場では全くの別人のようになるのです。

Even if you can’t understand all of the documentary, I think it might be interesting to listen to the different rhythms and cadences of the various accents. And if nothing else, the clothing and hairstyles are pretty fun to laugh at!

このドキュメンタリーの内容を全て理解することができくれても、多くのことなったリズムやイントネーションの違いをお楽しみ頂けるのではと思います。
それに、洋服やヘアスタイルもかなり面白くわらっちゃいますよ！
