Easter is a very important
day for many people around the world.

Do you know what Easter is about, and
how it is celebrated?

今年のイースター（復活祭）は3月31日の日曜日です。

イースターは世界中の多くの人々にとってとても重要な日です。

皆さんは、イースターとはどんな日か、そしてなぜ祝うのかご存知ですか？

Easter is always celebrated on a Sunday, but the date changes from year to year.

Technically, it's on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25, within
about seven days after the full moon.

イースターは毎年日曜日に祝いますが、年によって日にちが変ります。

厳密には、3月22日～4月25日の間の、満月の後およそ7日後の日曜日となります。

On Easter Sunday in the U.S., some families get together with their friends
or relatives and have a big picnic outside on the grass.

Then, the children
have what is called an "Easter Egg Hunt."

They run around looking for
colored eggs which have been hidden by their parents in the grass, under
flowers and plants, and by trees and rocks.

They get to keep the eggs they find.

アメリカでのイースターに当たる日曜日は多くの家庭で、友人や親戚が集まり、外に出て芝生の上で食事をします。

そして子ども達は「イースターエッグ・ハント」をします。

子ども達は走り回って、親達が芝生や花や植木鉢、木や石の下に隠した、色を塗った卵を探すのです。

見つけた卵は自分でとっておきます。

※イースターエッグ・ハントとは・・・ばらまいたり隠したりされた卵を見つけてあそぶゲームです。

（子どもたちが喜ぶ、キャンディーやお菓子などを入れた卵ですが、本物の卵も混ぜます。）

So what does the egg have to do with Easter?

New baby chicks are hatched
from eggs, of course, so we can say that eggs are symbols of "New Life."

That is simply because the chick is a new life which is born from the egg.

The basic meaning of Easter, too, is a celebration of "New Life," because
it is the day when Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ 2,000 years
ago.

At the same time, we celebrate the new life, the hope, and the joy
which we have found in God's love. 

では、イースターに卵が無くてはならないのはどうしてでしょう？

生まれたてのひよこは、もちろん卵から孵化しますよね。

ですから、私達は卵が「新しい命」の象徴であると言うことができます。

鶏は卵から生まれ、新しい命が始まるという簡単なことですね。

また「新しい命」の誕生をお祝いするイースターは、キリスト教徒にとっては二千年前に復活したイエス・キリストを祝う日でもあります。

そして一緒に、新しい命、希望、そして神の愛を見出した喜びを祝います。

Spring flowers are also popular at Easter time.

Tulips, daffodils, and
lilies are often used for Easter decorations.

The most common is probably a
specific type of lily called the "Easter Lily," which is a big, beautiful
white flower with a pungent scent.

さらに、イースターの時期には春の花々も人気です。

チューリップやラッパズイセン、ユリはイースターの飾りとしてよく使われます。

最も一般的なものは、大抵 「イースターリリー」と呼ばれるタイプで、
鼻にツンとくる香りの大きくて美しいユリです。
